My 3 Favorite Rhode Island Summer Pastimes

My 3 Favorite Rhode Island Summer Pastimes

by Robin Barrett Wilson August 03, 2016 0 Comments

I moved back to Rhode Island in 2013 and have been re-discovering this quaint, lively state I now call home once again. Did you know we have over 400 miles of ocean and over 100 private and public beaches? It’s August and summer will be over soon (I hear a sigh!) and there is no time to waste.  Just in time, here are my top 3 August getaway ideas in Rhode Island.

Block Island

Located 13 miles south of the mainland coast, Block Island is the perfect place to soak up the sun, chow down on seafood, and enjoy relaxation. Featuring 17 miles of sandy stretch, Ballard’s Beach is the place to experience “New England Tropical”. Head out for the day and rent a chair, drink a cocktail out of a pineapple, and listen to live music. You might trick your eyes into believing you’re in the Caribbean. When you are ready to start exploring, rent a bike and take a tour of the island. The island may be small, but the hills connecting one side of the island to the other will certainly give you a workout! After your bike tour, head over to Old Harbor for the quintessential New England dining experience. Wherever you choose to eat, you’ll find the freshest seafood! If you’d like to pick up a memento from your trip, there are plenty of small boutiques that carry Block Island tokens. You’re sure to find one that will meet your unique style!

Rosecliff Mansion Newport Rhode Island

I love the Newport Mansions! I love them so much that I can’t wait for friends to visit so I can take them through these wonders that sit in my backyard. In Newport, there are 10 magnificent “cottages” held in public trust by The Preservation Society. These “cottages” were summer homes for the uber wealthy during the Gilded Age and each mansion maintains its own special charm and history. Despite the enormity of each of these “cottages”, it’s easy to imagine how these families used the homes during the summer months and why they are so special, even today. I highly recommend spending the day touring these opulent homes. Travel tip: wear your walking shoes and purchase a 3 Mansion ticket.

East Greenwich

Last I heard, there are over 35 restaurants in East Greenwich. Most of them are on Main Street, which also happens to be the home of robin b. clothier. Whether you’re feeling casual or fine dining, you’re sure to find the perfect spot to eat and indulge. During the summer months, eating Al Fresco is available – a treat for us New Englanders.

If you are looking for an authentic, international experience, Rasa is my favorite spot for Indian food. It’s fresh, local, and open for lunch and dinner (and has the best curry ever, if you ask me!).

In the mood for a casual bar atmosphere with a hearty menu? I recommend Grill on Main. The new owners have introduced some amazing dishes with a ton of choices from salads to pizzas to pasta.

For fine dining, Besos is my personal favorite. The outside porch is the perfect spot for dining and watching the world go by. The small plates are a perfect way to sample a few different options and the “surf and turf” is served on hot stone. Don’t forget to leave room for dessert as their house-made sweets are worth the extra calories!

I do hope you enjoy the rest of the summer and would love to hear your favorite summer spots in Rhode Island. If you are in East Greenwich, don’t forget to stop in and say hello! We would love to meet you.

Why Your Boss Cares What You Wear

Wondering if it is worth it to make an effort in the morning and get "dressed" for the office?  There have been many stories (maybe urban legends) that point to the "dress for success" theory.  Here is my perspective on why I believe in "Dressing for the job you want, not the job you have"
